Incorporating Wellness into Your Beauty Pro Skill Set

October 1, 2024 by Hanna Marcus

The beauty industry is more than haircuts and facemasks. While beauty pros tend to have their specialties, a comprehensive and well-rounded approach to beauty is now the norm. This holistic approach is concerned with more than just appearances; it is about choosing to nurture and uplift people both externally and internally.

From boosting a client’s confidence to embracing natural ingredients in skincare, the modern approach to beauty now includes the concept of wellness. This merging of concepts–health, wellness, and beauty–produces stunning results that are not just gorgeous but also healthy and sustainable.

Key Takeaways

If you want to promote inner and outer beauty as a beauty pro, incorporating wellness into your skillset is a must. Your clients will experience the benefits of your new approach, and your beauty biz will thrive as a result. How can you add this to your service menu and embody wellness? This blog has the answers you're seeking.

A spa bath is being drawn at a beauty pro's spa–a wellness service that a beauty pro added to her service menu.

How to Add Wellness to Your Beauty Biz

Mental Health Matters

There is a clear link between mental health and well-being. As a beauty pro, helping your customers achieve the aesthetic results they want is your priority, and helping them recognize the vital role mental health can play in that equation is essential.

When we are stressed, depressed, or otherwise struggling with mental health, it is reflected in our physical appearance. This is especially true of our skin, where such feelings can manifest themselves as breakouts, dry or oily skin, and more.

By caring for your mental health–and encouraging your clients to do the same–you can inspire clearer, healthier skin. The outside reflects the inside! How can you help your clients rally around their own mental health for the ultimate wellness hack? First and foremost, you're not a therapist–but you can create a go-to list of referrals for the best counselors and therapists in your area that you can share with your clients.

But more than that, you can provide a safe, relaxing space through services like massage, sound baths, and guided meditation to help calm the mind and watch your clients embrace a healthier mindset. Love this idea but aren't sure you want to get certified in massage or meditation? Hiring contractors into your space who can run these elements of your business could be the ultimate way to add this to your repetoire.

Let’s Get Physical

You’ve undoubtedly heard it preached that movement is medicine. Well, it’s true! Exercise is great, and any amount of physical activity can be beneficial to your health and beauty. From lifting weights to jogging to simply doing a bit of housework, movement of any kind can help you feel better, get healthier, improve your mental health, and help your aura shine bright.

The key is consistency, so don’t be afraid to start slow and take small steps toward a healthier future. But don't just lead by example, provide ways for your clients to show up and tap into this element of wellness, too! Massage is a great way to offer physical wellness services, as is leading yoga or fitness classes in your space. Again, if being certified in these areas aren't part of your plan, subcontracting with local instructors might be the right move for you.

Focus on Vitamins & Nutrients

A healthy diet leads to healthy skin, hair, and nails. Fruits, vegetables, proteins, whole grains, and so on are all integral parts of a complete nutrition plan. Supplementing deficiencies with vitamins and minerals can also help.

As a beauty pro, you’re not a doctor, so any advice you give–diet, exercise, or otherwise–should come with a disclaimer that you are not a medical expert and your client should consult with their healthcare provider before making any significant changes to their health and wellness routine. However, emphasizing the importance of overall wellness, including a healthy diet, can work wonders for the body and its outward beauty.

Work with a certified dietician or supplement expert to help you create go-to packs of vitamin & nutrient bundles that your clients can purchase and replenish in your shop. This is a great way to boost your revenue but also help your clients reach their ultimate goal of wellness by balancing out vitamin and mineral irregularities.

Natural and Organic Beauty Products

From your backbar to your retail shelves, stocking your salon with natural and organic beauty products is a phenomenal way to promote wellness. The ingredients we use on our skin and in our hair can have a tremendous impact on our health, wellness, and appearance.

Even if a product is popular, it can be stacked with chemicals and other questionable ingredients. Opting for alternatives that are formulated using natural and organic ingredients means you can help nourish your client’s skin and hair while preventing exposure to synthetic, potentially harmful chemicals.

Not only are such chemicals potentially harmful, but they can also be harsh and irritating, causing skin reactions or drying out hair. Natural ingredients are gentle and suitable for everyone, including those with acne-prone or sensitive skin.

Invest in Yourself and Your Coworkers

Your ability to help your beauty clients live their best lives hinges on you and your team being happy, healthy, and at the top of your game. In other words, you need to practice what you preach when it comes to health and wellness by investing in yourself and in your coworkers.

You can start by perfecting your workflow. Make your workstations ergonomic to encourage healthy posture, take regular breaks, invest in tools that make work routines easier, and encourage your team to stay hydrated and nourished. These steps to take care of your physical state will go a long way toward promoting excellent work and a long, healthy beauty pro career.

Caring for your mental health and investing in continuing education can also propel your beauty biz to new heights. From keeping you sharp and up to date on the latest beauty trends and techniques to ensuring you have the mental capacity and energy to dedicate yourself wholeheartedly to your clients, embracing wellness as a beauty pro can help you unlock your full potential without stretching yourself too thin.

Beauty trends come and go, but wellness is lasting. Incorporating elements of wellness into your beauty pro skill set can grow your salon business and give your clients the knowledge and support they need to live their best lives.
