Why Do I Need Insurance?

In any industry, accidents are inevitable and unpredictable.

The average claim in the spa industry is $18,477, and we have seen claims as high as $125,000! Without insurance, this cost would come 100% out of your own pocket.By carrying liability insurance, you can transfer the risk of monetary loss to your insurance provider. You no longer have to carry the emotional stress of figuring out how you’re going to pay a claim or defend yourself during the investigation period.

Microblading is a great but vulnerable service, It only takes a single lawsuit or claim to bankrupt you.You are a professional with specialized training and certification. Though you may not be ultimately responsible for an injury or damages, your role makes you a target.

Even baseless claims require you to defend yourself, and legal defense can be costly.

Microblading Insurance FAQs

Do I need insurance to do microblading?

Microblading involves using a scalpel-like tool on the eyebrows, inches away from the rest of the client’s facial features. One small slip could present a situation that can wreak havoc on your private finances and professional career. Because of this inherent liability that exists for microblading professionals, insurance becomes a vital business-continuity tool, as well as, personal financial safeguard. Microblading insurance generally provides coverage for general and professional liability claims, up to a predetermined limit. A good policy should also include a number of additional coverages and benefits that, all together, provide a robust insurance package for microblading professionals. Coverage elements provided in our policies like product liability, stolen equipment, rental damage, and identity protection, help protect professionals from many different angles. Learn more.

Does Beauty Insurance Plus require a microblading license in order to purchase a policy?

Yes. We require our members to have all of the requisite training/certification/licenses by their locale in order to purchase microblading insurance. Because microblading is hands-on and involves tools that can easily cause harm, we require professionals to demonstrate they have the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform this service on clients. In order to obtain a policy through us, professionals will also need to have passed a training course, have had practice on at least five models in training, be able to present proof of completing the training, and then provide an acknowledgement that they alone accept the full responsibility of keeping their equipment sterilized and well-maintained. Be sure to check with your state board often as rules and regulations within the industry can change.

Is microblading considered a tattoo?

While microblading is a different service than tattooing, some states group these services together under the tattooing profession. In Florida, for example, microblading professionals need a license as a tattoo artist and then must perform the service inside of a licensed tattoo parlor. Always check your state board’s website for current regulations regarding microblading in your area.

What’s the best insurance for microblading professionals?

When weighing their options for professional insurance, microblading professionals need to look closely at the policy’s general and professional liability provisions in relation to price. A good policy should have stout coverage limits for these critical safeguards but still be economical.

  • General liability protects policyholders from third-party claims for injuries or property damage and is often referred to as “slip and fall” insurance for the many suits that have arisen from this simple cause and effect.

  • Professional liability protects the policyholder from claims for injury or damages resulting from providing your service. Most often known as “malpractice insurance”, as claimants are asserting that your service caused them some form of loss and they are demanding compensation. A slip of the hand that botches a microblading session could cost thousands in medical bills or legal defense.

Our members enjoy peace of mind and can focus on creating the perfect look for clients - knowing that an unforeseen event is covered under either their general or professional liability coverage or one of the many additional protections that come with our microblading insurance policies.

Is microblading the same as permanent make-up?

Not entirely. Fundamentally, microblading is solely performed on the eyebrows, but permanent makeup also involves different facial attributes like lips and eyes. A permanent makeup professional employs the use of an electrical machine very much like a tattoo artist’s gun. The tool injects pigments to the top layer of skin only, which will last longer than conventional makeup but will gradually fade over time. Microblading is a similar process but the tool is not electrically-powered. Rather a kind of scalpel is used to manually insert pigment into the upper layers of skin surrounding the eyebrows until the desired shape, fullness, etc. is achieved. While neither microblading or permanent makeup is entirely permanent, permanent makeup treatments do tend to have a more prolonged effect than microblading. While microblading can be added onto an existing policy, insurance for permanent makeup artists is not currently provided under our beauty professional insurance program.

How much does Beauty Insurance Plus microblading insurance cost?

If you’ve been a member with Beauty Insurance Plus for at least six months, you can add microblading coverage to your policy for a discounted member rate of $349 per year. To add microblading coverage to a new policy is just $499 per year, one of the absolute lowest in the industry, yet which still provides all of the great coverage benefits included with our regular policies. Call us today at 800-941-3583 to speak with a helpful, real-life insurance agent about all your options.

What types of benefits come with a microblading insurance policy?

We want to give our members the best value for the investment they have made in us so we include a blend of additional protections and discounts. Members enjoy peace of mind with additional protections like product liability, rental damage coverage, stolen equipment coverage, and an identity protection plan. Freebies include a free, professional website, an annual magazine subscription to a beauty publication of their choice, members-only discounts and early access on leading gear and accessories, and a free industry newsletter. Beauty Insurance Plus provides coverage for more than 350 different beauty and wellness modalities and we continue to add more. Coverage extends to estheticians, nail technicians, cosmetologists and more. If you don’t see your chosen modality currently listed, call an agent to see if we can have our underwriters add it.

We offer great coverage limits, affordable policies, excellent customer service, and supreme accessibility through a state-of-the-art member portal. See how we can give you peace of mind knowing your career is protected with coverage from Beauty Insurance Plus.

How do I transfer my microblading license?

Transferring a license from one state to another can be tricky. Different states may have different licensure/certification requirements and you might need to take additional training or testing in order to activate the new license. Some states offer reciprocity if the requirements are close enough in nature from the home state to the new state but be sure to keep all of your records as these may be required as proof. Your first stop should be your state board’s website. Most states are good at providing all the information you need for license transfers but if you don’t see everything you need, just call and make sure you are completing all the requisite steps. Getting started early and paying attention to the details can make for a much smoother transition.

Are estheticians able to perform microblading services?

Estheticians can provide microblading services if they have the proper training and licensure to do so. Some states, like Florida, categorize microblading under tattooing and so require a tattoo license and for the work to be performed in a tattoo parlor. An esthetician who already has a policy with us can add microblading coverage onto their policy for the discounted member rate of just $349 per year, one of the lowest rates in the industry.

Why is it called microblading liability insurance?

By definition, a liability is something you are legally responsible for. When providing microblading services, you are taking the safety and well-being of the client into your hands. You will be open to general liability, like a slip and fall, professional liability, so-called “malpractice”, product liability, and even additional events that could cripple your practice like damage to a rented space, equipment that’s stolen, or even identity fraud. Our insurance for microblading artists provides ample provisions for many different forms of liability that are inherent to the business of beauty. Contact our helpful agents to learn more about liability coverage.

Does permanent makeup insurance cover microblading?

Our policy for beauty professionals performing microblading does not currently include permanent makeup as a covered modality. Permanent makeup insurance can also be referred to as permanent makeup liability insurance or permanent cosmetics insurance. When choosing a microblading insurance policy, be sure to make sure this specialization is actually included on the policy.

Why is it important for cosmetologists to have microblading insurance?

Microblading involves physically injecting pigment under a client’s skin with small needles. What could go wrong? Even skilled professionals with years of experience can be confronted with an impossible-to-predict scenario that opens them up to some claim for loss. A lawsuit can be entirely frivolous and still be financially devastating for a cosmetologist without insurance paying their own legal defense fees. Our microblading insurance provides beauty professionals with an assurance of coverage and support, whenever an unfortunate event should arise. With some of the best rates in the industry, our policies offer a cost-effective way to protect both a career and personal finances.
