Why Do I Need Esthetician Insurance?

No two skins are alike. Though that can be rewarding and exciting for your experience, it can also be a potential danger. What works for one client can create harm for another.

Though you are well trained and never intend to hurt anyone, a mishap can happen. Unfortunately, no career is perfect, and the same tools you used to help your clients can potentially harm them.

Common Circumstances that Need Coverage

  • Slip and Fall
  • Bodily Injury
  • Allergic Reaction
  • Incorrect Treatment
  • Unsanitary Treatments
  • Stolen Equipment
  • Rental Damage

Esthetician Insurance FAQs

What kind of insurance do estheticians need?

Esthetician insurance needs to provide adequate coverage for professionals so should have provisions for the major areas that can present liabilities. Mainly, this is general and professional liability.

General liability is called slip and fall because it can cover injuries like a simple slip and fall in your lobby that results in a suit. This important coverage provides up to $2 million for each third party claim for injuries or property damage and a $3 million individual annual aggregate.

Professional liability is called malpractice which literally means “bad work”. Coverage covers any claims for injuries or damages that come from actually providing your service to clients. An example here would be a client stating your microblading session left them injured and they had to seek medical attention and missed work. They file a suit against you for the full amount of their medical costs and their lost wages. Our program includes up to $2 million per occurrence and a $3 million individual annual aggregate for claims related to professional liability.

In addition, coverage made for the real world should include at least some provision for things like:

  • Product liability - when a client has an adverse allergic reaction to a product you used;
  • Stolen equipment - when makeup, brushes, or other vital equipment is stolen, you’ll have up to $1,000 in coverage;
  • Rental damage - covers damages to a rented space, up to $100,000.

How much does esthetician insurance cost?

To make our esthetician liability insurance as accessible as possible we have several options available:

  • Insurance Plus for Professionals: $159 per year
  • Two Years of Insurance Plus for Professionals: $279.95 ($139 per year)
  • Insurance Plus for Students: $25
  • Benefits-Only Plan (no insurance): $39
  • Beauty Insurance Plus also offers part-time and monthly payment plans. Our part-time policy is $135/yr 15hrs or less.

What’s the difference between general liability and professional liability insurance?

These two liability coverages should be an absolute necessity for any esthetician insurance program out there and generous coverage limits should be included for both since these types of claims are most common for professionals working in the beauty industry. Breaking these coverages down, we see:

  • General liability: coverage for what’s deemed “slip and fall” insurance, as these are the types of accidents and injuries which occur in or around where you offer your services. As simple as it sounds, a client that slips on the way to your booth and injures themselves could result in a claim with total costs running into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

  • Professional liability: this important coverage covers those claims related to claims of “malpractice”. While malpractice may conjure images of shady doctors, bad practice can occur to even the most practiced esthetician, being extremely careful in their work. All it takes is one tiny little slip of your hand during a treatment, failing to notice the signs of an underlying condition, or simply a disgruntled client asserting that your services left them injured or their property damaged in some fashion and firing off a lawsuit.

With BIP, you get $2 million for each occurrence for claims related to general and professional liability, and $3 million in total for each individual member annually. These stout limits help cover the costs of the claim, as well as any legal defense fees, if they became necessary.

When will my insurance go into effect?

After you fill out a quick and easy application online, you will progress to the payment portal where you can decide what payment plan works for you. As soon as you check out, you will have immediate insurance coverage. You’ll also be able to log into your membership portal and can see policy documents, pull coverage certificates when they’re needed, and service all of your account in one, easy-to-access location.

Do I really need esthetician insurance if I only rent a salon booth?

Definitely. When you rent booth space as an esthetician, you are typically doing so as a 1099 contractor. Setting your own hours and managing your clients is a great freedom but this also means you retain most of the liability for providing your services. The best safeguard for your career is purchasing esthetician liability insurance.

Insurance provides a safety net when an unfortunate mishap leads to a claim against you. Other losses you may face at some point in your career include stolen equipment or damages to a rented space. Without insurance, these costs would be paid out-of-pocket. Made by beauty pros, for beauty pros, our insurance for estheticians provides great all around coverage at an affordable rate.

Where can I see a comparison of different esthetician insurance providers?

Check out the comparison grid above to see how our program stacks up to other leading competitors. We offer this side by side right on our website because we are confident our program provides the best coverage options with the most affordable rates.

Does Beauty Insurance Plus's policy cover me in all 50 states?

With Beauty Insurance Plus, not a thing. We include full-portability with our professional esthetician insurance policies. This means no matter if you change jobs or move to a new state, your coverage follows you wherever you provide services within the 50 U.S. states.

What kind of member benefits come with BIP's insurance coverage?

We want to make our esthetician insurance program as great a value as possible so include hundreds of dollars worth of member benefits. Benefits include:

  • Identity Protection Plan
  • Free Professionally-Designed Website
  • Free Annual Subscription to a Beauty Publication
  • Discounts and Deals on Beauty Products
  • Free Business Resources
  • Coverage for More than 350 Different Beauty and Wellness Modalities

Is there a difference between esthetician and aesthetician insurance?

None at all. Aesthetician is a common misspelling for esthetician. Don’t worry, you’re not the first one to make that mistake.

Where do I find online reviews for different insurance providers?

Check Trust Pilot to see reviews online. TrustPilot gets verified reviews and posts them on neutral grounds - all so you get the best possible picture of a product. We are proud members rate our services as “Excellent” with 4.5 / 5.0 stars.

Why would an esthetician need product liability coverage?

Product liability coverage applies to claims from an allergic reaction a client has to a product you use during the session. If you’re doing a chemical peel and the client has a severe reaction, goes into anaphylactic shock, has to be transported by an ambulance, hospitalized, and misses a week of work, the costs associated with everything would quickly mount. That’s why product liability coverage is vital and our esthetician insurance plan provides up to $2 million per occurrence to cover related claims.

Does esthetician insurance cover my supplies?

Absolutely. We know for many estheticians, your supplies and your equipment is how you earn a living and when someone steals these from you, they are taking away your livelihood. That’s why we provide up to $1,000 with a $250 deductible to cover any equipment that’s stolen. Questions about stolen equipment coverage? Talk it over with an agent today.

How do I find the best esthetician insurance program to fit my needs?

The best esthetician insurance should provide suitable coverage limits, an easy way to sign up/service your account, and do so at a competitive rate.

  1. Suitable Coverage Limits: setting limits can be tricky. Too high and you will be paying for more than you will ever need. Too low and it may not be adequate for covering claims. Suitable coverage means it is specifically designed for the industry. Our unique perspective here means you get smartly-set coverage limits that offer a robust limit that’s never more than you need.
  2. Easy to Sign Up / Service Your Account: what good is an insurance program that takes a long time to get covered or is hard to use when you need it? Our process is really simple and only takes a few minutes to enjoy complete coverage. On top of that we have knowledgeable agents available 7 days a week whenever you need help.
  3. Competitive Rate: we always encourage our members to check out how our program stacks up against our leading competitors. In a side by side comparison, our program provides the best combination of protection and affordability.

What services can I provide under my estheticians insurance policy?

Some estheticians insurance plans out there only cover a few services and then want to charge a premium for other popular services you might be able to provide. We wanted to keep our policy simple so we provide coverage for more than 350 different beauty and wellness modalities. Added bonus - we are continually adding new services to the list. Chances are good your chosen service is covered but if not contact our knowledgeable agents about whether it might be added.

Where can I see what requirements my state has for an esthetician license?

Every state is a little different but the best resource and an entity you should become very familiar with is your state board. Your state board helps your state regulate the esthetician industry within its borders. Most state boards’ websites have pretty good information on everyday needs like license issuance, renewals and transfers. If you are ever unsure about something, the best course is to call and speak with a live person. We’ve even compiled the esthetician license requirements from every state just to make starting your new career that much easier.

Why is occurrence form coverage the preferred choice for estheticians?

Occurrence form and claims made are the main policy forms out there. Occurrence form coverage says whenever you file a claim, as long as the claim event occurs while your policy is active, you are covered. This is especially important when your policy expires and you still need to file a claim for a past event that occurred while the policy was active. With claims made, if your policy is expired, you have no coverage. We believe our members should enjoy the best coverage options available and ones that make sense for the beauty and wellness industry so only offer occurrence form policies.

Can I get esthetician insurance while I’m still in beauty school?

Absolutely. Training to be an esthetician can be a tough process and even in school you can face liabilities for the hands on practice work you will be conducting. The incredible value of full professional coverage at just $25 a year provides students with great protection through their schooling. As well, many students find it beneficial to wait until they are nearing graduation to secure student insurance coverage. That way, almost all their first year on the job is covered all at that low student rate. Not sure which path is right for you? Talk over your options with an agent today.

What types of claims does esthetician insurance cover?

Estheticians provide many services which require working on or around a client's head, neck, face, and other sensitive areas. Services require the utmost skill and focus to provide a safe environment and experience. But even skilled estheticians, operating with skill and care can face situations totally outside of their control. Here are some examples of liabilities a professional esthetician might experience at some point in their career:

  • A client slipping on your welcome mat is an example of a general liability.
  • A client claiming your waxing session left them with torn skin would fall under professional liability.
  • A client has a terrible allergic reaction to the chemical peel you’re using. This would be a product liability.

Can you purchase esthetician insurance online?

Absolutely! Our esthetician insurance program was designed to be extremely accessible for today’s professionals that are often operating on the go. After filling out a quick online application and checking out, you’ll be granted immediate access to our streamlined membership portal. With ease of navigation built-in, you can have full access to all of your policy documents and account information in one, central location.

Why would an esthetician need rental damage coverage?

Being involved in esthetician insurance for so long, we’ve seen a seemingly infinite number of ways that liabilities can present themselves to estheticians at some point in a career. Knowing that many professionals rent a space to provide services, our esthetician insurance program also includes coverage for any damages that might occur within the space while it’s being rented. With rental damage coverage, professionals get up to $100,000 to help cover the costs of repairs to a rented facility.
