In order to become an esthetician in Michigan, one must first complete a minimum of 400 hours of schooling in order to be able to sit in for the state exam. A 9th grade education or equivalent is required, and applicants who want to pursue this career path must be a minimum of 17 years of age.
Once you pass your exam, your renewal of the license is required to be done every other year, by August 31; if it is not done by October 31 (a fee is assessed if you wait this long), your license is going to lapse. If you are coming in from a different state, reciprocity is allowed without additional schooling, upon showing your competence is equivalent to that of an esthetician in the state. You must also show the schooling and training you received is equivalent to what is required in Michigan.

How Much Does Michigan Esthetician Insurance Cost?
In terms of Michigan esthetician insurance policies, a business owner in the state (owning a salon or spa), must have professional liability insurance. This is going to cover against injuries in the workplace, injuries which are caused by malfunctioning equipment or a slip and fall accident.
However, there are no additional requirements in terms of having an individual esthetician liability insurance policy. But, working in this field, it is smart practice to hold a personal liability insurance policy. For starters, your employer’s policy is only going to cover so much, if anything at all, for you personally; if you injure a client with a heating device or certain chemicals, this is a personal liability claim, and you are not going to be covered. This can result in loss of license, fines, and penalties, as well as other costs. Additionally, even if your employer has a liability policy in place, it might only cover the owners, not individual employees; so, having a personal liability coverage policy is a simple way to protect yourself from lawsuits.
- Students pay just $49 per year of coverage
- One year of coverage for full-time estheticians for just $169
- Two years of coverage for full-time estheticians for just $299
It’s possible that a client may file a false claim, and if you are not covered, you are paying out of pocket for these lawsuits, whether or not you are found to be at fault. Your liability coverage is also going to protect your license, which is your livelihood in the state. No matter how great you are, or how long you have worked in the field, mistakes are going to occur, so it is best to protect yourself, and purchase the right personal liability insurance coverage. Even though it is not required, you will find that having coverage is an easy way to avoid high costs, including those that may come your way due to the lawsuits that may be filed against you during your career. In addition to offering great coverage, you can find an extremely affordable personal liability policy by simply comparing quotes online and comparing the different types of esthetician coverage that is available to you in the state.

Policy Highlights & Benefits
The #1 Choice for Esthetician Liability Insurance
As an esthetician, it is important to purchase an individual esthetician insurance policy, especially if your employer does not have business coverage. Your personal policy is going to protect you above and beyond what is protected by your employer’s business policy if they own one.
You can’t help the fact that claims are going to be filed against you. If you are having a bad day and injure a client, or if they are extremely unhappy with the quality of your work, they can sue you. If a client is distressed, an emotional distress claim may arise from the work you perform; malpractice and other claims are also very common in this field of work.
Since you are working so closely and on a personal level, you have to protect yourself and the license that you have worked hard to receive. A personal liability insurance policy is the only sure-fire way to ensure you are covered in the event one of these, or any other claim is filed. You can choose from varying levels of coverage and rates when selecting a policy; it is an easy way to protect yourself and your finances, as well as to protect your license from being taken away in the event a lawsuit is filed against you as a business professional in the state.

While Michigan does not legally require estheticians to hold liability insurance, it could be a big mistake to go without it. Not only does esthetician liability insurance protect you from the cost of a lawsuit against you, but it could be a requirement for many salons and spas. Of course, mitigating the risk of a liability lawsuit is a critical component to a secure financial future and career in this industry. To protect yourself and keep your finances secure, every esthetician must have cosmetology insurance.
Why Is It Important to Have Insurance For Your Career?
Providing beauty services often requires close contact with clients, which can increase the risk of accidents occurring. While it's easy to think that the chances of something going wrong are low, the truth is that accidents do happen, and it's essential to be prepared to protect both yourself and your career.
For instance, if you're applying hair color to a client, and the treatment is left on for too long, it could result in damage to the hair or burns to the scalp. In such a scenario, the client may decide to sue you for damages or emotional distress, leaving you to bear the entire cost of the lawsuit. However, if you have the right liability insurance, your finances and reputation will remain protected.
Rather than taking chances with your livelihood, it's crucial to prioritize protecting your career and business by having the appropriate insurance coverage in place. With insurance, you can work confidently, knowing that you're prepared for any unexpected incidents that may arise while providing your valued services to clients.
