What Does Cosmetology Insurance Cover?

  • Professional Liability (or malpractice) covers any grievances or claims filed by clients claiming to suffer injury caused by negligence on behalf of the cosmetologist. Examples include: injuring a client or an infection received from a nail treatment.
  • General Liability (or slip-and-fall scenario) protects against third-party claims for bodily injury and/or property damage. From a facial cream that breaks out your client’s skin to accidentally damaging your client’s property due to an equipment malfunction, general liability insurance would protect you from these potential lawsuits.

What coverage does BIP include?

Unlike countless insurance companies that offer too little coverage for too high a price, BIP offers generous coverage limits, incredible benefits, and a complete set of protective policies. We don't squeeze our policyholders for every last penny and include the following coverage for every beauty insurance policy:

  • Professional liability coverage for errors and omissions.
  • General liability for accidents, like slips and falls.
  • Identity Theft Protection coverage
  • Personal Injury and Advertising Injury Coverage
  • Over 500 modalities, services, and techniques.
  • Incredible member benefits
  • So much more!

We genuinely desire for our policyholders to feel utterly confident in their protection. We include all this and more in every beauty insurance policy.

In Florida, cosmetologists offer a diverse range of beauty services, aiming to enhance their clients' well-being. Yet, these services carry inherent risks, and even a minor mishap can imperil a cosmetologist's career.

To safeguard against such risks, every cosmetologist must have appropriate liability insurance. This allows them to provide top-quality services without financial concerns in the event of unforeseen incidents, fostering confidence in their craft, knowing they're protected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have prerequisites to complete?

If you are at least 16 years old and have a high school diploma, you are eligible to obtain a cosmetology license in the state of Florida.

What do I need to do to obtain my cosmetology license?

You will have to complete 1,200 school hours and pass both written and practical exams.

Do I need a license to be a cosmetology instructor?

No, a license is not required.

Does Florida require me to complete CEUs?

Yes, 16 board-approved CEUs are required for renewal of your license.

How often do I need to renew my cosmetology license?

A person practicing cosmetology must pay $55 dollars per renewal and must renew his or her license by October 31—group one licenses have to renew on even-numbered years and group two licenses have to renew on odd-numbered years.

Moving to Florida from another state?

No problem, just make sure you hold a cosmetology license from another state with equal requirements. Otherwise, you must complete additional training hours to qualify for Florida endorsement.

Am I required to have cosmetology insurance in Florida?

While by law, cosmetologists may not be required to hold liability insurance, it could be a critical mistake to go without it. A personal liability insurance plan can help mitigate the cost of a liability lawsuit if you make a mistake or a client is injured while under your care. For example, if you accidentally leave chemicals in a client's hair for too long and they receive chemical burns, they could hold you legally responsible for their medical expenses, replication costs, and other compensation needs. Without liability insurance, these expenses could put your financial stability or even your career at risk.

Furthermore, several salons and spas require liability insurance as a prerequisite. Cosmetologists without liability insurance will find it highly challenging to procure a steady position.

Why Is It Important to Have Insurance For Your Career?

Providing beauty services often requires close contact with clients, which can increase the risk of accidents occurring. While it's easy to think that the chances of something going wrong are low, the truth is that accidents do happen, and it's essential to be prepared to protect both yourself and your career.

For instance, if you're applying hair color to a client, and the treatment is left on for too long, it could result in damage to the hair or burns to the scalp. In such a scenario, the client may decide to sue you for damages or emotional distress, leaving you to bear the entire cost of the lawsuit. However, if you have the right liability insurance, your finances and reputation will remain protected.

Rather than taking chances with your livelihood, it's crucial to prioritize protecting your career and business by having the appropriate insurance coverage in place. With insurance, you can work confidently, knowing that you're prepared for any unexpected incidents that may arise while providing your valued services to clients.
